Local Energy, Local Art

Plico Powers Street Mural Project

The long laneway behind Woolworths is about to become one of Busselton’s most eye-catching spaces, and local business Plico Energy is helping make it happen.

Plico is the latest in a growing list of community-minded businesses supporting the Busselton Street Art Project, an initiative led by Building Busselton Town Team to bring vibrant public art and Aboriginal cultural stories to life right in the City centre.

“It’s fantastic the project is underway,” said Plico Energy Board member Sarah Molloy.

“As part of this local community, we want to see more of this happening.”

A Laneway With a Story to Tell

The mural — to span 77 metres along the Woolworths wall in the Kent Street laneway — will feature contemporary work by an Aboriginal artist, developed through consultation with Elders and local youth. The artwork concept will be shaped by community workshops to ensure the final piece reflects shared values and future visions.

“It’s an opportunity to capture stories and voices from the young community that is our future,”

said BBTT member Jacquie Happ.

“An artwork concept workshop is being planned specifically for Aboriginal youth, to give them a real sense of ownership.”

From Cheques to Chalk

This project is about more than just paint. During the mural’s creation, BBTT will host artist talks and a free community art workshop, inviting locals to be part of the process — not just observers of the end result.

And while donations like Plico’s are helping kick-start the early stages, the team is still seeking further support to fully realise the mural.

“Sourcing funding has taken a lot of work,” said BBTT President Lisa Massey.

“Local contributions like Plico’s show major funders that this project matters to our community.”
