A Parklet Trial for Busselton

With funding from the Streets Alive program and backing from Town Team Movement, Main Roads WA and WALGA, this 18-month trial will test how a mobile parklet, a park-style structure placed in a parking bay, can boost street activity and benefit local businesses.
But what’s a parklet, exactly?
Imagine a bright, welcoming outdoor space with tables, seating, planters, a roof for shade, solar lighting, even charging points. Now place that space where a single car might otherwise sit — and open it up to everyone. That’s a parklet.
Why a Parklet?
Because foot traffic equals life. A study by Urbis found that replacing a car bay with a parklet can increase local spending by up to 80%. More seating encourages longer visits and a stronger sense of place — helping both people and businesses thrive. And for Busselton, it means testing new ways of reclaiming our streets for the community.
How It Works
The Sitting in the City parklet is fully mobile. Every few months, it will move to a new location in the City centre — hosted by a different local business. Hosts don’t need to be cafés or eateries, and there’s no cost to participate. Businesses simply agree to help keep the space tidy and top up the watering system. In return, they receive promotional support and a chance to see the benefits first-hand.
Each host site will be chosen based on location, foot traffic, and local interest. Throughout the trial, we’ll collect feedback, usage stats, and business outcomes — helping to shape future plans for public space activation in Busselton.
