Community-Built Seating Blooms in the City Centre

With support from the City of Busselton’s Community Assistance Program, this local placemaking initiative brought together the talents of the Busselton Men’s Shed, Jupp’s Floorcoverings, and staff from Australia Post and APM Employment Services to brighten up public spaces on Queen and Prince Streets.
“We work on simple projects that make the City centre more vibrant and attractive,” said BBTT President Lisa Massey.
“These two spots needed a lift — and now they’re blooming with colour and character.”
Built by Locals, for Locals
The Busselton Men’s Shed took on the construction of the benches and planter boxes, while Jupp’s Floorcoverings generously donated durable flooring panels to help make it happen. Together, they transformed plain footpath corners into small places to pause, connect, and enjoy the street life.
“This project had a clear vision and design — and when there are cakes for morning tea, our members are always happy to help!” joked Men’s Shed coordinator Trevor Fisher.
Plants That Can Take the Heat
These aren't just any planter boxes. They're filled with waterwise plants, set into a clay-rich soil mix that holds moisture — a smart and sustainable solution for outdoor spaces. Staff from Australia Post and APM have kindly agreed to water them, helping ensure the plants thrive well into the future.
A Small Change with Big Impact
This project is also a gentle nudge to local businesses — showing that a few simple seats and some greenery can completely transform the pedestrian experience. Adding separation from traffic, creating social “nodes,” and inviting people to linger longer all helps to bring life and foot traffic back to the streets.
“It’s about showing how even small-scale interventions can have big ripple effects for local business and street culture,” added Lisa.
